The laser scans a cross-section of the 3D model, heating the powder to just below or right at the melting point of the material. The laser fuses tiny metal, plastic, glass, or ceramic particles into a 3D model. Fusion is achieved by scanning the cross-sections, which are also generated from the CAD data. Post scanning, the base of the machine is lowered by a pre-set amount, typically between 50 and 200 microns, and the laser again starts fusing the material, such as polystyrene, nylon, titanium, alloys, and steel mixtures, in use to achieve the desired shape. The feeder bed rises, and a fresh layer of powder is swept along the build platform. The next layer is then traced out, and the process repeats layer by layer until the model has fully grown.
